Job Details- Physically demanding job. Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, stand, lift, push and pull for the full shift. The environment is very hot and very dusty. All candidates must be willing to adhere to strict PPE and safety requirements. A millwright is responsible for supervising or directly performing the building and maintenance of new and existing facilities, including equipment and machinery used to make or process parts, materials and products from raw materials.
The millwright job description entails many tasks, such as oiling, greasing, lubricating and repairing machinery. The millwright is responsible for maintaining a clean and safe work area, using materials such as paint to make surfaces shine, changing light bulbs when needed and cleaning parts of the machinery. They also must follow stringent safety procedures in all areas that include inspections of equipment prior to operation, cleaning of work areas before each shift, maintenance and repair of tools and equipment including safety equipment such as hard hats when needed. Working at a construction site or manufacturing plant requires working in an environment that requires key safety practices, such as wearing safety goggles to protect one from flying particles when making repairs on equipment. They also need to use lifting straps to prevent back injuries when moving equipment around and wearing ear plugs to prevent hearing loss from the machinery that is in operation at all times. They use measuring tools including calipers to measure mass or thicknesses of materials during the installation of piping systems at a construction site. Millwrights also use measuring instruments such as rulers and tape measure to cut, shape and form materials in the manufacturing industry.
Operates machinery to assemble and dismantle equipment, using hand tools, power tools or machinery
Assembles and erects steel structures and equipment, using hand tools and hoisting equipment
Dismantles machinery for repair or salvage, using torch, cutting torch and welding machine
Performs welding operations on structural steel shapes and pipe plates, using cutting torch to shape metal parts for repairs or new construction projects
Trims excess metal from newly welded joints with grinder to obtain correct measurement and angles on structural steel shapes with saws or shears
Assembles and erects equipment, using hand tools and hoisting equipment
Operates machinery, using automatic tools and operating devices
Repairs or replaces defective electrical wiring, motors, compressors, pumps or other electrical equipment
Loads materials into or removes material from bulk storage facilities for use in pipeline repairs and construction projects only when the placement of the material is controlled by a licensed contractor
Weighs, measures, levels and computes the height of load, using a tape measure and surveyor’s compass
Uses a slide rule to compute height of loads as well as other mathematical calculations for loading, stability and projecting objects for construction projects only when the placement of material is controlled by a licensed contractor
Plans and designs structures, using layout equipment and methods to determine correct placement of structural steel shapes on pads with optical or electronic measuring devices in the field.
